The whale shark returns to La Paz Bay

A massive shadow glides beneath the surface, spotted like an upside-down starlit sky. A mouth as wide as a doorway opens calmly to swallow plankton, barely noticing we're there. The 2026-2027 season is about to open, bringing the world's largest fish back to La Paz Bay.

Twelve meters long, and gentler than a goldfish.

The giant that harms no one

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world โ€” up to 12 meters, sometimes more. Its mouth alone measures 1.5 meters wide. Impressive, except it only uses it to filter plankton and fish eggs. No teeth to worry about: it's one of the gentlest marine animals there is, far more wary of us than we are of it.

A fingerprint underwater

Every whale shark carries a unique spot pattern, like a fingerprint. Scientists use it to identify and track individuals over the years โ€” and some of the ones we see in La Paz Bay have been known for entire seasons.

Every constellation of spots is unique โ€” each whale shark's own signature.

A few numbers that sound made up

It can live up to 130 years โ€” your great-grandchildren might swim with the same individual you did. Its skin is 15cm thick, the thickest of any animal on Earth. And it can dive nearly 2,000 meters deep, deeper than most submarines. And yet, despite its size, it's one of the most harmless marine animals in existence.

In the water with us

Mask, snorkel, fins: we swim at its pace, at a respectful distance, never touching or chasing it. The guide spots the animal, positions the boat, and that's when it all begins โ€” slipping gently into the water next to an animal the size of a bus.

Dive With Us tip: Stay relaxed and let it swim at its own pace. Respecting its calm is exactly what makes the moment so powerful.
